A Blessing of the Palms will take place before every Eucharist during the weekend of Palm Sunday. Blessed palm branches will be made available to those who wish to take some home.

Sunday 5 April: Palm Sunday

 

9 am  Eucharist

10 am  Eucharist, celebrated by the bishop

 

Christ’s entry into Jerusalem marks the start of his long suffering.

The Church community accompanies its Messiah on this ‘via dolorosa’.

From the Last Supper to Mount Olive. From the place where he will be condemned to the cross and into the grave.

Is there any hope left?

The Festival Eucharist starts with a procession from the cathedral.

Monday 6 April

 

3.30 pm  Confession will be heard in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament

4 pm  Eucharist in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament

7.30 pm  Introduction to the concert by Bart Paepen, the cathedral’s pastor 

8.15 pm  Concert by the Vlaams Radiokoor

 

The programme features such pieces as ‘Membra Jesu Nostri’ by Dietrich Buxtehude and ‘To the hands’ van Caroline Shaw.

Thursday 9 April: Maundy Thursday
 

10 am  Diocesan Chrism Mass

 

The bishop blesses the oils that will be used throughout the diocese of Antwerp for the next 12 months

for the sacraments for baptisms, communions, consecrations, catechumens and the anointing of the sick.

 

8 pm  Evening Eucharist on Maundy Thursday

 

The Easter triduum starts with the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist.

Jesus gives himself to his disciples in the form of bread and wine.

He washes our feet like a slave. He gives himself entirely to us. Eucharist, celebrated by the bishop 

This is followed by a procession to the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, where people can pray in silence and venerate the Blessed Sacrament until 10.30 pm.

 

 

 

Friday 10 April: Good Friday
 

9.30 am - 5 pm  Bach’s St John Passion leads us deeper into the experience of Good Friday. 

 

Introduction by Bart Paepen, the cathedral’s pastor. A simple lunch will be served.

Price: € 10. Enter via Groenplaats. 

 

 

3 pm  Ways of the Cross

In a spiritual connection with all the people who must bear such a heavy cross today,

Jesus once again follows the 14 Stations of the Cross.

Solidarity gives rise to pity.

This is followed by a procession through the city centre. 

 

4 pm  Confession will be heard in the ambulatory around the choir. 

 

8 pm  Veneration of the Cross

 

The Church community directs its gaze to the Cross, in silence and contemplation,

powerless and speechless, recognising it as a sign of true love, which transcends everything.

The bishop celebrates this solemn service. 

 

 

 

Saturday 11 April: Holy Saturday 


10 am - 5 pm  Silence: continuous prayer at Jesus’ grave and confession 

 

No Eucharist at 4 pm and 5 pm. 

 

The Church community spends the next 24 hours in the silence of the grave.

Across the world, there is a sense of emptiness in the churches.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation can be received in the ambulatory. 

 

7.30 pm  Introduction to the liturgy of the Easter Vigil 

 

9 pm  Easter Vigil

 

During the most important liturgical service of the year, the light of the Risen One expels darkness from the hearts of the faithful.

The community solemnly renews its baptismal vows and the bishop sprinkles everyone with holy water.

We rise from death with Christ.

The eucharist starts with the blessing of the fire and the lighting of the Paschal candle in Handschoenmarkt.

The bishop will celebrate Mass. 

 

 

 

Easter Sunday 12 April 

 

8 am  Easter greeting

 

Christians of all denominations meet in front of the cathedral.

They wish each other Happy Easter while the bells ring in Easter and then return to their own communities to celebrate Easter. 

 

9 am  Eucharist with organ accompaniment in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament 


10 am  Festival Eucharist

 

In the full light of Easter morning, the Church community rejoices about the magisterial gift of the Resurrection.

The bishop will celebrate Mass. The cathedral choir will sing Händel’s Hallelujah among others.

 

12 pm  Eucharist


5 pm  Festive Vespers

 

The bishop formally marks the end of Easter day with the traditional evening prayers. 

 

 

 

Monday 13 April


3.30 pm  Confession will be heard in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament
4 pm  Eucharist in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament
5 pm  Organ concert on Easter Monday
